Perth, Western Australia - 3 Sept 2001 - The Sungroper Solar Car Association is pleased to announce that the Alternative Energy Development Board has become our first major sponsor.

The Sungroper Solar Car Association is a group of local enthusiasts who are building the first ever West Australian entry for the World Solar Challenge, an event for solar powered cars that runs 3010km from Darwin to Adelaide in November 2001.

The Alternative Energy Development Board has selected the Sungroper Solar Car Association as a recipient of its 2001/2002 funding program. Under the agreement, $10,000 will be provided towards the cost of building the solar car, and the association members will visit schools across Western Australia as part of a community education program.

"We are excited to be part of such an environmentally friendly event" said assistant team manager Peter Lewis.

The objectives of the association are to

• Construct a vehicle that will comply with all the regulations and requirements for the challenge.
• Make the vehicle sturdy and amenable to repair with the primary aim that the vehicle will be able to complete the course
• Have a program of testing so that the operation of the vehicle is fully understood under varying conditions and to anticipate its behaviour in foreseeable contingencies.
• Demonstrate that there are viable alternatives to fossil fuels.
